Residents of Ndzongiseni in EMaxesibeni are celebrating the completion of a new bridge, bringing an end to years of suffering, especially during rainy days. The bridge project, a collaboration between Alfred Nzo District Municipality and Umzimvubu Local Municipality, was completed in just seven months.

Speaking on behalf of the mayor, a representative emphasized the importance of the bridge in connecting the Ndzongiseni community and ensuring smooth transportation. “The bridge was a vital effort in connecting the communities of Ndzongiseni,” the representative stated. “Our message to the community is that the Mayoral PR Week’s purpose is to showcase the work completed by the municipality and highlight these projects while handing them over to the communities.”

Community member Thembile Senzela expressed relief and happiness at the completion of the bridge. “We are very happy; we will not suffer anymore. It’s been a long wait. It was hard not attending funerals or going to town when it was raining.”

Before the construction of the bridge, life was challenging for the residents. Tragically, a woman lost her life when she drowned while trying to cross. Schoolchildren were also affected, often unable to attend school during heavy rains.

The new bridge, which includes a 1.9-kilometer access road, now links a local school and nearby villages, significantly improving connectivity.

Nosisi Mphephanduku, a Ndzongiseni resident and worker on the project, shared her positive experience. “It was very nice working on this project, and our employer took care of us even when we were sick.” She also thanked the Umzimvubu Local Municipality for the employment opportunity, which helped her support her high school children.

Zintle Mbele, who worked as a community liaison officer (CLO), acknowledged some challenges during the project, including complaints from residents and the need to cut through some yards, affecting a few households. However, with community support, they overcame these challenges. Mbele encouraged young women to consider careers in construction, emphasizing the opportunities available.

Councillor Ngxabi of Ward 5, which includes nine villages, noted the inadequacy of the old bridge, describing it as too small and shallow. “The new bridge is of a higher standard compared to the old one,” he said. The new infrastructure not only connects local schools and villages but also ensures safer and more reliable transportation for all residents.
