Six pedestrians have lost their lives after they were knocked by a speeding BMW hatchback in Redoubt location on the R 61 route in Bizana, on the 21st of June 2024 at about 23:00.
It is alleged the vehicle was travelling from Bizana travelling on the easterly direction towards Port Edward with one occupant, which is the driver when it lost control and hit the pedestrians. Five of the pedestrians were declared dead on the scene while the 6th victim died enroute to Oliver and Adelaide Tambo hospital. The suspect thereafter fled the scene after the incident. His vehicle was then towed to Bizana police pound.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose has urged both motorists and pedestrians to be vigilant.
A case of culpable homicide was opened by the Bizana SAPS. Three days later the police managed to arrest the 24 years old driver. The suspect has then been granted bail of R1000.00 by the Bizana magistrate court.
MEC for Transport and Community Safety Xolile Nqatha has expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and has called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice. The case has since been postponed to 15th July 2024 for further investigation.
Police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said 6 counts of culpable homicide have been opened against the suspect. The deceased have been identified as Siyavuya Sabelo (31), Sandiso Nkasa (30), Kamvelihle Dindi (24), Mvisiswano Ngaleka (24), Sibonelo Potye (29) and Mthokozisi Jabulana (29). The suspect has been identified as Sanele Zinkwantshu aged 24.
