The lives of informal traders in EmaXesibeni, formerly known as Mt Ayliff, are poised for significant improvement as the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism prepares to hand over vital trade infrastructure to the Umzimvubu Local Municipality.
The momentous occasion, slated to be officiated by MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism, Mr. Mlungisi Mvoko, alongside Alfred Nzo District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Vukile Mhlelembana, and Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Zukiswa Ndevu, will witness the official transfer of a state-of-the-art facility valued at R26 million.
Approximately 100 informal traders are set to benefit directly from this initiative as they are allocated new stalls and related infrastructure. This pivotal move aims to provide traders with a conducive environment to conduct their businesses, ensuring cleanliness and safety are prioritized.
As elections loom for May 29, 2024, some community members speculate on the timing of such initiatives, suggesting that municipalities across the country may be motivated by electoral gain.
“Many of us believe that these actions are not purely out of concern for our welfare but are rather aimed at garnering votes from the public,” commented a local community member.
