In a vibrant display of camaraderie and celebration, Bizana athletes laced up their running shoes to commemorate Bulelwa Mabele’s 40th birthday with an exhilarating 20 KM fun run held on the R61. The event, which unfolded on Monday, January 8, 2024, saw participants sprinting from Ferguson Park to Nomlacu Location, next to Hluma Lodge, creating an unforgettable spectacle along the route.
Bulelwa Mabele, a seasoned professional teacher and dedicated solo runner in Bizana, has marked her presence in the running community for the past five years, conquering various Comrade Marathons and races. Overcoming health challenges that forced her to take a hiatus from running for nearly two years, Mabele, with a renewed spirit, decided to celebrate her milestone birthday with a run that encapsulated her journey and resilience.
Reflecting on her choice of distance, Mabele shared, “I would have gone for 40 KM if it wasn’t for my health issues. I didn’t have to think or plan much for this day since I knew that this time I just want to run, as I never thought I would reach this age the way my health was so unsettled.”
The participants, ranging from seasoned runners to enthusiastic beginners, had the option to choose between 10 KM, 15 KM, and the challenging 20 KM route. Remarkably, even the novices opted for the 15 KM distance, showcasing the infectious spirit of unity and accomplishment that defined the event.
Upon crossing the finish line, the joy radiating from the runners created a unique and jubilant atmosphere, a testament to the significance of the celebration. Miss Mabele expressed her heartfelt gratitude to those who braved the weather to join the run and celebrate her special day. She emphasized the joy and happiness running brings to her life, appreciating the company of fellow athletes, especially those running for the first time and those who participated virtually.
The Bizana community’s outpouring of support and participation in this memorable event underscored the power of unity, resilience, and the shared love for running that binds this tight-knit group of athletes.
