The Police Minister, Bheki Cele, has urged on sister government to urgently address drivers of criminality in areas grappling with high crime levels and gangsterism.
This follows the official launch of Operation Shanela that took place in Gelvandale in the Eastern Cape on Friday.
Since the beginning of Operation Shanela police in the province have arrested over nine thousand and 300 hundred suspects including various crimes such as rape, murder, and cash-in-transit.
While walking on the streets Minister Cele was concerned about the high number of school-age children, loitering around during school hours.
Cele says these areas need far more than law enforcement to make life better, it is very clear the police alone won’t win the war on crime. The high rate of children not going to school pushes them towards criminality and gangsterism.
This is why they call on the government and society to approach fighting crime and address the drivers of crime by dealing with socio-economic matters.
