On Wednesday, news broke out that four people had been shot dead and several were seriously injured after alleged taxi violence in Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Pondoland Times spoke with the chairperson of the Bizana Taxi Association, Bheki Mjweni and he shared the story as it was reported to him.

“I was called by Faku, who is a rank manager, reporting that some drivers were shot in Port Shepstone. I turned back, We then drove to Port Shepstone with a number of owners and found four people shot dead: two drivers and two drivers assistants, three drivers and one taxi owner were injured. We also heard that someone selling airtime was also injured but has not been identified yet,” said Bheki Mjweni chairman of the Bizana Taxi Association.

The Bizana Taxies Association condemned such misfortune and said they do not know what caused this horrendous violence and hope more evidence will surface in order to understand the cause of the killings and hopefully give families closure.

The office of the chairperson called all families whose loved ones were involved in this despicable act of violence and informed them of the loss or injuries to their family members. The names of the deceased and injured have not been disclosed due to the sensitivity of the matter.
