XJ Athletic Club a Force to Be Reckoned With in the Athletic Arenas

Over 23,000 runners took part in the ultimate human endurance race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, where Tete Dijana and Gerda Steyn claimed top honours.

Among the standout participants was the XJ Athletic Club, proudly based in the rural town of Emaxesibeni, which sent a formidable contingent of 35 runners—including five women—who all crossed the finish line. This marks a significant increase from the 19 athletes (with just one female) the club fielded last year.

Known affectionately as “Pink Drive”, the club’s Secretary General Mawanda Mpithi hailed this year’s participation as a milestone.

“This is a huge accomplishment for a team that was formed in 2018 and had to pause for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are deeply grateful for the support we receive from our families and communities,” said Mpithi.

“This shows that we’re not just growing in numbers, but also improving in quality. Next year, we plan to attack the race with a doubled regiment.”

The club’s rise reflects both community spirit and athletic discipline, proving that even from the dusty roads of Emaxesibeni, champions can rise.
