From modest sports grounds to a magnificent new sports field, Umzimvubu Local Municipality has transformed the sporting landscape for the youth of Ward 1. EmaXesibeni. The completion of a substantial sports field stands as a testament to the municipality’s commitment to providing ample space for youth engagement and athletic pursuits. The lack of a sizeable stadium for sports tournaments in Ward 1, EMaxesibeni, is now about to become a thing of the past.
Mayor Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu, during a recent oversight visit, personally inspected the ongoing project of revitalizing the Phepheni Sport Fields, slated for completion by April 2024. Speaking during the oversite visit, Mayor Ndevu highlighted the duty to furnish sports facilities, allocate grants for infrastructure development, and make funds available for specialized programs, collectively involving various government stakeholders and structures. Mayor Ndevu expressed satisfaction with the overall progress of this vital infrastructure initiative.
The newly inaugurated sports field has brought immense joy and happiness to the residents of Ephepheni. The ward council shares the belief that it will not only serve as a hub for athletic activities but also keep the youth engaged, diverting their focus away from criminal activities.
Cllr Mpakamisi Kiviet of Ward 1 expressed his elation, foreseeing a positive impact on the youth’s lives and a reduction in crime, a prevalent issue in their village. He emphasized plans to broaden the spectrum of sports played on the field, envisioning tournaments that go beyond soccer and netball to include rugby, boxing, cricket, and more.
This initiative is especially significant as the last sports field in Phepheni fell victim to vandalism. Thabang Joseph, a community member, ensured that there were no incidents of vandalism during the construction of this new, beautiful field.
Olinda Msetshana, an active youth participant in sports, expressed gratitude to Umzimvubu Municipality for their support in creating the new sports field. He expressed a desire for additional support from sponsors to provide necessary sports kits, balls, and equipment.
This multi-million-rand project, initiated in the previous financial year (2022/2023), has been entrusted to one of the UMzimvubu contractors for its completion.
Cllr Ntombizandile Garhana from the LED office expressed immense pride in the ongoing project, highlighting its role in fostering the growth of UMzimvubu contractors. The collaborative efforts of people from Phepheni and the ward council showcase a successful partnership.
Mayor Ndevu is anticipated to continue visiting more projects to monitor progress and reaffirm the municipality’s dedication to community development.
