In a statement from the Eastern Cape Transport Department, a total of 20 people were killed on the provinces’ roads this past weekend.
According to the departments’ spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, nine of the 20 people killed, were pedestrians who were hit by vehicles in different towns.
“Two separate crashes on Saturday, one in Cathcart and another in Peddie, claimed six lives, while three people returning from a family gathering died in a crash in the N2 between Peddie and Makhanda yesterday”, said Binqose.
He says a biker and another motorist died in two other incidents reported in Nelson Mandela bay and Kareedouw over the weekend.
“Human error and the use of alcohol on the road were cited as some of the contributing factors in all these crashes”, said Binqose.
Culpable homicide dockets have been opened in all the mentioned cases.
