The Transnet bursary activation campaign at the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality

On Monday Transnet national ports authority hosted a bursary activation campaign at the Winnie Madikizela Mandela local Municipality for grade 12s doing – Maths and Physical sciences) in Bizana, at the Oliver and Adilade Tambo auditorium. High schools like Cangci technical high school, Bizana Village Senior secondary school, AD Tshayingca and all the other schools that fall under Alfred Nzo East were present at the informative session.

Transnet has a number of bursaries for various career fields, the learners were made aware of, these opportunities to inspire young minds of opportunities they could potentially achieve in the near future.

Leaners were showed and  introduced to different Transnet  ports in South Africa, the Port Elizabeth, Durban, Ngqurha, East London, Mostly bay, the  port of Cape Town, Saldana and Richards bay.

Leaners also got a chance to be educated about  different careers found within the Transnet national authority,  most leaners were seeing most the careers for the fist time in their lives, some of  these careers  fall under scarce careers and are known to be career fields that pay well.

These are some of the careers TNPA educated learners about:

Lighthouse technician

Dredge designer

Marine Pilot

Vessels traffic controller

Transnet staff shared their background stories to encourage young people about  opportunities available for them and the possibility of becoming anything one can imagine.

Anathi Mthekeli Fleet Manager at Transnet, shared how her light was dimed when she was a teenager as she had  lost her grandmother at a very young age, she shared that she was raised by seven different families, she says she decided that she wanted go change the background of family by choosing to hang around with people who had a mindset of winning.

She shared that she is a product of Transnet bursary she studied at Durban university of technology she added that during her journey when she was still at varsity Transnet made her feel like she was never alone there was always enough support.

Leaners found the session to be very informative and learnt that career opportunities are not limited to what they have always grew up seeing, careers like teaching, nursing and policing. Most learners say they found the background stories to be very encouraging because they find some stories relatable.
