There are still no answers to what killed 21 teenagers at the Eastern Cape tavern in June, but the owner has appeared in court for violation of the liquor board act.
The Enyobeni tavern owner’s trial, Siyakwamkela Ndevu, has been set for 2 September 2022 for a pretrial conference. Ndevu is facing criminal charges of selling alcohol to children under the age of 18 and for permitting his employees to sell alcohol to persons under the age of 18. However, there is also an investigation into whether the alcohol being sold was harmless or could it be the reason why the 21 teenagers lost their lives.
Parents of the victims and community members have expressed their opinions that the law should be strengthened and they are not satisfied that Ndevu is attending his case while he is custody, and he does not show any remorse for the incident that killed these children.
