The Death of Local News: A Crisis for Our Communities

Imagine waking up one morning to find that your local newspaper is no longer available. No more browsing through the pages to stay informed about local news, events, and issues that matter to you. This is a harsh reality that many communities are already facing, and the consequences are far-reaching.

In the United States, newspapers are disappearing at an alarming rate of 2.5 per week, leaving over 200 counties without access to local news and information. Similarly, in our country, dozens of trusted local newspapers have been forced to shut down, leaving a void in the fabric of our communities.

The solution is not as simple as “going online.” Most local newspapers already have a strong online presence, with large audiences. However, the online world does not pay for journalism, and the advertising revenue that once sustained local newspapers has dwindled to almost nothing.

Big Tech giants like Facebook and Google dominate the online advertising industry, making it difficult for local media to compete. As a result, local journalists are no longer able to attend council meetings, report on local court cases, or provide a platform for local sports clubs and schools to share their stories.

The demise of local journalism also means that our region’s written history is at risk of disappearing. Facebook and Google do not employ journalists to write obituaries or cover local news, and they do not pay taxes on their profits in our country.

So, what can you do to help? Support local media by subscribing to your local newspaper, encouraging local businesses to advertise, and urging your local municipality and NGOs to use local media to communicate with residents. Every little bit counts, and your support can make a world of difference.

The Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) has launched a national campaign to raise awareness about the importance of local media and the need for support. Join the conversation on World Press Freedom Day (May 3rd) and throughout the month of May. Let’s work together to ensure that our local newspapers continue to thrive and provide the news and information that our communities need.
