ULUNDI – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has deployed disaster response teams to Amajuba and Umzinyathi Districts following a destructive thunderstorm on the afternoon of Tuesday, 26 December 2025.
The storm, which struck around 16:00, brought heavy rain, hail, and gale-force winds, severely affecting the eMadlangeni, Dannhauser, and Newcastle municipalities.
What Happened
Local authorities confirmed major damage in several areas:
- eMadlangeni (Utrecht): Over 20 houses were destroyed across Wards 2, 3, and 5. Three people were injured and are receiving medical care.
- Dannhauser: Approximately 115 households were affected; 30 homes were completely destroyed.
- Newcastle: Displaced residents are being relocated to the Osizweni Community Hall.
- Umzinyathi District: Dundee and surrounding areas reported uprooted trees and damaged infrastructure.

Official Response
MEC Buthelezi said disaster teams are on-site conducting clean-up operations and assessments. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) has been instructed to work with local municipalities to provide relief such as food parcels, blankets, and emergency shelter.
“We are working around the clock with our social partners to restore dignity to those who have lost their homes today,” said Buthelezi.
The PDMC remains on high alert as unstable weather continues across the province.
