In a significant breakthrough, information provided by a vigilant member of the public led to the recovery of a firearm that had been stolen in KwaZulu-Natal over nine years ago. The subsequent arrest of a 34-year-old man unfolded at Ndwane locality, Marhamzeni A/A (Flagstaff), resulting in charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

On the evening of Tuesday, 02 January 2024, law enforcement officers, acting on a tip, conducted a search at a homestead in Ndwane locality, Marhamzeni Administrative Area (Flagstaff). The search revealed a shotgun with ammunition discreetly stashed inside a wardrobe. Subsequently, an occupant of the premises was apprehended on charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A preliminary investigation into the recovered firearm unveiled its connection to a theft that occurred in KwaZulu-Natal back in July 2014.

Yesterday, 03 January 2023, the suspect made his first appearance at the Flagstaff Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The court proceedings marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to address illegal possession of firearms and related criminal activities.

District Commissioner Maj Gen Phumzile Cetyana expressed commendation for the swift action taken by law enforcement. “As senior managers, we always encourage our foot soldiers to have strong bonds with their communities. It is through such relations, where trust develops and residents become willing to share information,” concluded Maj Gen Cetyana.

The arrest serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between the police force and the community in addressing crime and ensuring the safety and security of the Flagstaff region. Further investigations are expected to follow as authorities work to establish the full scope of the suspect’s involvement and any potential connections to criminal networks. The court appearance is a crucial step in holding individuals accountable for the possession of stolen and unlicensed firearms.
