In a recent statement, Eskom, the South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility, has announced adjustments to the current loadshedding schedule. The utility revealed that Stage 5 loadshedding, which has been in effect, will continue until 05:00 on Tuesday, after which it will be reduced to Stage 3.

Over the last 24 hours, Eskom successfully brought back online five generating units, which will allow emergency reserves to replenish adequately by Tuesday morning. Consequently, this will facilitate the reduction of loadshedding to Stage 3 from 05:00 on Tuesday until 16:00. However, Stage 4 loadshedding will then be reinstated from 16:00 on Tuesday until 05:00 on Wednesday. This alternating pattern between Stage 3 and Stage 4 loadshedding will be repeated daily until further notice. Eskom assured that it will closely monitor the power system and communicate any changes to loadshedding promptly if necessary.

Currently, unplanned outages have diminished to 14,579MW of generating capacity, while planned maintenance outages stand at 7,316MW.

In response to the ongoing challenges, Eskom’s Power Station General Managers and their teams are working diligently to ensure the return of additional generating units to service. It is planned that a total of 2,150MW of generating capacity will be restored by Wednesday.

Eskom reported that the evening peak demand tonight is expected to reach 26,902MW.

Acknowledging the strain on the power system, Eskom appealed to the public to use electricity sparingly and efficiently, recommending actions such as switching off geysers and pool pumps from 17:00 to 21:00. Such measures help reduce demand and alleviate pressure on the power system, thereby contributing to lower stages of loadshedding.

As South Africa grapples with ongoing electricity challenges, Eskom emphasized its commitment to managing the situation effectively while urging cooperation and support from the public in conserving energy resources.
