XJ Athletic Club athletes are intensifying preparations for the Comrades Marathon scheduled for 14 June 2026.
The club’s runners recently took part in the Cosmos 3-in-1 Ultra Marathon in Secunda as part of their build-up to the race known as the Ultimate Human Race.
Around 25 athletes from the club participated in the event, which covers a distance equivalent to 75 kilometres.
What happened
Athletes from XJ Athletic Club travelled to Secunda last weekend to compete in the Cosmos 3-in-1 Ultra Marathon.
The event, which is divided into three race phases, is widely used by long-distance runners preparing for the Comrades Marathon.
Members of the club, also known as the Pink Drive or Theli’nduku XJ athletes, used the race to chase Comrades qualification times, improve personal best performances and strengthen their seeding positions in long-distance running events.
During the race, the group was visible across the streets of Secunda as they completed the challenging route.
What athletes said
XJ AC athlete Nomampondomise Sodinga said the race was well organised and suitable for runners preparing for the Comrades Marathon.
She explained that the race route was demanding and required strong endurance from athletes.
“The ultra marathon is good for elite runners and those preparing for the Comrades Marathon because it is quite challenging,” she said.
Sodinga completed 52 kilometres during the race but did not finish the final phase due to fatigue.
However, she said she plans to return next year to complete the remaining 21 kilometres of the race.

Why it matters
The Comrades Marathon remains one of the world’s most recognised ultra-marathons and requires months of preparation from athletes.
Events such as the Cosmos 3-in-1 Ultra Marathon help runners build endurance and test their readiness before the main race in June.
Athletes also use these races to qualify for Comrades and improve their starting positions.
