The United Democratic Movement has formally asked the Speaker of Parliament to initiate oversight into how the SAHRC handled its complaint involving Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

In a letter dated 9 March 2026, the UDM requested parliamentary intervention after submitting a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in December 2025.

The complaint relates to public remarks by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos and the institutional response of the South African Football Association (SAFA). The UDM says it has not received procedural clarity from the SAHRC or the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) regarding how the complaint is being handled.

What is happening?

According to the letter sent to the Speaker of Parliament, Thoko Didiza, the UDM lodged a complaint with the SAHRC on 11 December 2025.

The complaint raised concerns about remarks made by Hugo Broos during a media engagement ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The party stated that the remarks were widely interpreted as racially and sexually insensitive, prompting public concern about equality and dignity in sport.

The complaint names two respondents:

  • Hugo Broos
  • South African Football Association (SAFA)

The UDM said the matter also raises broader questions about institutional safeguards against racism and sexism in sport.

Mr Broos issued an apology on 15 December 2025, which the UDM accepted. However, the party says the complaint also concerns institutional accountability, not only the coach’s individual conduct.

The UDM says it has since requested updates from the SAHRC and the CGE but has not received procedural clarification.

Why it matters to readers

The request for parliamentary oversight could affect how public complaints about discrimination in sport are handled.

The issue involves several institutions responsible for constitutional rights:

  • SAHRC – investigates human rights complaints
  • CGE – addresses gender equality issues
  • SAFA – governs national football
  • Parliament – oversees public institutions

If Parliament agrees to review the matter, committees may examine how the complaint process is being handled and whether institutions responded appropriately.

The UDM says this is important because national teams represent South Africa and should reflect constitutional values such as equality and dignity.
