Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has paid tribute to former Springbok Women’s captain Lusanda Dumke, who passed away from cancer this week at just 29 years old. Dumke, born in 1996, was not only a national rugby hero but also a beloved mentor and friend of WSU’s rugby family.
What Happened
Dumke died earlier this week in East London, sending shockwaves through the rugby community. She was a familiar face at WSU, supporting and mentoring players from the university’s All Blacks rugby team. Dumke had been battling cancer and was remembered for her strength both on and off the field.
Official Response
WSU’s Head of Sport, Bhongo Nontshinga, described Dumke as more than just a supporter.
“She was a mentor to our players. The song has ended, but the melody lingers on,” he said.
Khanya Solani, a WSU All Blacks flank from Mooiplaas, shared how Dumke’s donation of rugby boots uplifted his game and spirit.
“She made me feel seen and encouraged… those boots gave me belief and courage,” Solani said.
Community Impact
Dumke’s work through the Lusanda Dumke Foundation, in partnership with Adidas, brought resources and hope to under-resourced student athletes. Her donation of eight pairs of boots to WSU players in 2024 left a lasting emotional impact.
