Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx has been crowned the World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year. He received the award on 23 November 2025, at a global ceremony in Cape Town, where South Africa secured back-to-back wins for the first time. Marx outperformed fellow nominees Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ox Nche.
What Happened?
Malcolm Marx, a two-time Rugby World Cup champion, delivered a standout 2024 season. His dominance in lineouts, scrums, breakdowns, and open play strengthened the Springboks’ campaign and propelled him to rugby’s highest individual honour.
He now joins an elite list of only four South Africans to win the award:
- Pieter-Steph du Toit
- Bryan Habana
- Schalk Burger
- Malcolm Marx
Marx had been nominated twice before, in 2018 and again this year, making this victory a historic milestone in his 31-year-old career.

Official Response
SA Rugby President Mark Alexander praised Marx and the broader Springbok squad.
“On behalf of SA Rugby, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Malcolm,” Alexander said. “His work ethic is unbelievable. He embodies everything we value in a Springbok — resilience, commitment, and character. This award truly reflects his massive contribution.”
He also commended fellow nominees Du Toit, Nche, and Ethan Hooker, whose presence on the shortlist highlights the depth created under coach Rassie Erasmus.
“To have three of the four Player of the Year nominees and a Breakthrough Player nominee from South Africa is a testament to the class of this team,” he added.
Community Impact
Rugby analysts say Marx’s recognition strengthens South Africa’s global standing and inspires young athletes in local unions and school systems. Fans across the country celebrated the announcement, noting that the award reflects years of consistent teamwork and coaching stability.
Sports development groups expect the win to boost participation numbers and reinforce the Springboks’ influence across international rugby structures.
