Banyana Banyana’s road to defending their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown has officially begun, following Tuesday’s draw in Morocco which placed them in Group C. The reigning champions will face continental giants Nigeria, along with Burundi and Botswana, in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most intense groups.

The draw rekindles the fierce rivalry between Banyana and Nigeria, whom they famously beat 2-1 in the 2022 group stages. Coach Desiree Ellis welcomed the draw, emphasizing South Africa’s readiness to face any opponent in their quest to retain the title.

“The work continues. We know it won’t be easy, but we’ve done it before and we’ll fight to do it again,” Ellis said.

The tournament kicks off in Morocco in September 2024, with Banyana looking to build on their historic maiden WAFCON win and strong performances at last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup. With key players like Thembi Kgatlana, Refiloe Jane, and Hildah Magaia expected to feature, the team carries the hopes of a nation once more.
