The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the total prize for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 winner to a record-breaking $10 million (approx. R187 million), President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed on Thursday.
What Happened
CAF announced a 43% increase in the winner’s prize money ahead of the TotalEnergies AFCON Morocco 2025 tournament.
This means the AFCON 2025 champions will receive $10 million, up from $7 million awarded in 2021.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe said the boost reflects CAF’s commitment to “making African football globally competitive and self-sustaining.”
Official Response
“We have significantly increased the prize money… as part of our ongoing commitment to African football,” said Dr Motsepe.
CAF’s improved finances are credited to better partnerships, marketing and broadcast strategies. These funds are being reinvested into national teams and football development across the continent.
Community Impact
South African fans will be watching closely as Bafana Bafana prepare for AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
The financial increase also means:
- National teams benefit from more funding
- Players may receive bigger bonuses
- Stronger investment in grassroots football
Prize Breakdown (Estimate):
- Winner: $10 million
- Runner-up: $5.5 million
- Semi-finalists: $3 million each
- Quarter-finalists: $1.5 million each
