The Department of Small Business Development has officially clarified that the Spaza Shop Support Programme is open to entrepreneurs of all ages, not just youth under 35. This comes in response to widespread confusion about who qualifies for the popular financial support fund aimed at growing township and rural spaza businesses.
“Our programme is open to all entrepreneurs regardless of age. You don’t have to be 35 or younger to participate,” reads an official statement from the Department.
The Spaza Shop Fund, offered in partnership with SEDFA and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), is designed to provide financial and non-financial support to registered spaza shops across South Africa. Priority will still be given to youth, women, and people with disabilities, but the age restriction no longer applies.

Why This Matters
With township and rural economies still recovering from the long-term effects of COVID-19 and inflation, this fund offers a lifeline for micro-entrepreneurs. Government is also positioning the fund as a way to boost food security, support local production, and formalize informal traders.
