The South African Revenue Service has collected R2.010 trillion in revenue, marking its highest-ever performance.
What happened
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has announced that it collected R2.010 trillion in revenue.
In a public message titled “Thank You SA 2026”, the outgoing Commissioner thanked taxpayers, traders, and SARS staff for contributing to the milestone.
He said the achievement follows seven years of rebuilding the institution after a period of weakened governance, low trust, and declining performance.
Key points from the statement:
- SARS has collected over R11 trillion cumulatively since 2020
- Annual revenue has now exceeded R2 trillion for the first time
- Around 14,500 SARS employees contributed to the recovery
- Tax-to-GDP ratio averaged about 25.9%
Why it matters
Tax revenue directly funds essential services in South Africa.
These include:
- SASSA social grants
- Public hospitals and clinics
- Schools and education funding
- Roads and infrastructure
According to Pondoland Times analysis, higher tax collection improves the government’s ability to fund services — especially in rural areas where communities depend heavily on public support.
The statement also reinforces that:
- Compliance is being closely monitored
- Non-compliance may face legal consequences
- Trust in SARS is being rebuilt
