Sibapiwe Hadebe, inspired by personal experiences and the loss of a dear friend to cancer in 2022, hosted the first-ever “Padel for Cancer” charity event in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. The event, designed to raise awareness and funds for cancer, was a combination of sport, fun, and community spirit that resonated deeply with Hadebe’s active and outgoing personality.

Hadebe chose cancer as her charity focus due to the impact it has had on her and those close to her. “I lost a dear friend, Jacqui, through cancer, and the choice was also influenced by people around me who have been affected by this disease,” she said. Hosting a sporty and engaging event was a way for her to combine her passion for fitness with a meaningful cause.

The event saw an incredible turnout, with people from different walks of life showing up to support Hadebe’s initiative. She expressed her gratitude for the diverse group of attendees, noting,

The most moving moment for me was when people actually showed up. The happy faces throughout the day assured me that the event was a success. Some came alone but ended up making connections through the event.

Hadebe credited the strong network she has built over the years for the diversity and support at the event. Her friends, family, and even people she had never met came together to back her cause. “Diversity is part of what I believe in as a person, and the relationships I’ve built throughout my life contributed a lot to who was present on the day,” she added.

Sponsorship played a significant role in the event’s success. Padel Nation Umhlanga generously sponsored the venue and facilities, while various organizations contributed prizes and resources for the day. “The day could not have been a success without Padel Nation Umhlanga and the various sponsors,” Hadebe remarked. She also highlighted the support she received from a CANSA representative, who provided guidance throughout the planning phase.

Reflecting on the event’s objective, Hadebe emphasized the importance of raising funds to support cancer patients and promoting early detection awareness.

I hope our people can start looking into early detection by regularly checking themselves before it’s too late, –  she said.

Looking to the future, Hadebe confirmed that “Padel for Cancer” would become an annual event, with plans to expand and collaborate further with Padel Nation and its sponsors. “The vision is to continue with ‘Padel for Cancer’ while partnering with Padel Nation and its sponsors to host annual events at their different locations,” she explained. She also sees the potential for local businesses to benefit, as sponsors had advertising and selling rights during the event.

Sponsors for the event included: Padel Nation Umhlanga, Spar Umhlanga, 7 Sisters, Sophia Alley -CANSA, GAGASI FM, Theos Couture, Lungile Z Makeup Artist, Khanyam Creative Solutions, Adcock (GynaGuard), SAB, Engen Campsdrift PMB, and Qhawekazi.
