The Polokwane-based side, Sekhukhune United, failed to advance to the MTN8 semi-finals after a narrow 1 – 0 defeat against Eric Tinkler’s Cape Town City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Babina Noko went into the game without their newly appointed head coach, Peter Hyballa, who was set to lead the team for the first time after his appointment last month. Instead, assistant coach MacDonald Makhubedu took charge, hoping to put away the animated Tinkler’s side and proceed to the MTN8 semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history.

Speaking to SuperSport TV before the game, coach Makhubedu clarified Hyballa’s absence, stating that the German tactician is waiting for his working papers.

Yes he is at the top. I think it’s just a matter of working permit, so he is still here, – Makhubedu told the broadcast.

The 1 – 0 defeat.

A destitute start in the first minutes of the game was expected as both teams were playing their season openers. However, the momentum shifted when Sekhukhune United’s forwards began pressing high after the opening 20 minutes of the first half.

Tinkler’s side struggled against new recruit Keletso Makgalwa (27), who created chances in the final third and struck from outside the box. Tinkler utilised counterattacks in an attempt to adapt to the game and exploit Sekhukhune’s high defensive line.

The Citizens came close to taking the lead through Gonzalez, but Sekhukhune’s shot stopper, Ali Sangare, cleared the ball off the goal line. Tinkler’s troops caused a stir for Sekhukhune, forcing them into errors. Indeed, Sekhukhune eventually conceded a penalty after an aggressive tackle on Fortune Makaringe.

Gonzalez failed to convert the penalty, as his shot was denied by the crossbar. The Citizens did not take the lead until the 86th minute when Gonzalez converted from the spot.

Eric Tinkler’s side joins Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch and Sundowns/ Polokwane City in the MTN8 last four. Tinkler is no stranger to the competition, having won it with SuperSport in the 2017/18 season.
