In honour of Youth Day, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has joined the nation in commemorating the bravery, resilience, and sacrifice of the youth of June 16, 1976, who stood firm for their rights under apartheid.
In a message shared as part of Youth Month 2025, SASSA CEO Mr. Themba Matlou paid tribute to the generations of young people who fought for justice, saying,
“We honor the bravery and resilience of the youth who stood up for their rights and freedom when it seemed impossible to do so.”
Matlou emphasized that SASSA remains committed to supporting South Africa’s most vulnerable communities—especially children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. He reiterated the agency’s focus on social security as a pillar of dignity and empowerment, stating that SASSA’s services are not just about providing relief, but also enabling families to build better and more sustainable lives.
“Our grants and services are designed to provide a safety net and promote self-sufficiency. Our programmes are aimed at empowering individuals through sustainable livelihoods,” Matlou said.
As part of Youth Month, SASSA has called on all South Africans to reflect on the sacrifices of the past while working together to ensure a brighter and more equitable future. The message concluded with a wish for a meaningful Youth Day celebration, honoring both the legacy of 1976 and the ongoing mission to uplift youth and marginalized groups.
SASSA’s youth-focused campaigns continue to align with national development goals, with a vision of “paying the right social grant, to the right person, at the right time and place.”
