Beneficiaries have been assured by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) that the gold payment card is still valid.
The agency claimed that even though the card has an expiration date, it remains active.
“Beneficiaries must not panic or succumb to the hijacking by scammers and circulating fake news that the card will expire in April 2023,” it said.
SASSA said gold cards are genuine and can be used at Postbank and ATMs.
Beneficiaries are encouraged to provide their private bank accounts to Sassa as another option for safe and easy payment. Sassa will in due course communicate changes if there are any.
“Fraudsters who pretend to be SASSA officials and target old people and people living with a disability must immediately be reported to the local police,” said SASSA.
SASSA issued a warning this week over new false WhatsApp messages that say grant recipients can apply for a R700 award online without visiting a SASSA office.
“It’s the quickest way to apply for all bona fide citizens only who need helping hands in their various activities,” reads a WhatsApp message circulating.
According to SASSA, applicants cannot submit an online application for a SASSA grant since they must collect the necessary paperwork and the grant amount has not been increased.
