The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will begin implementing stricter verification measures to ensure that social grants are paid only to those who truly qualify. The announcement was made during Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s 2025 Budget Speech, where he outlined key reforms to improve the efficiency, integrity, and sustainability of South Africa’s social protection system.
“Improvements in the administration of the social grant system will include monthly verification checks and strengthened data sharing between government departments,” said Godongwana.
These measures will apply across all SASSA grants, including the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which has been extended to March 2026.
What Are the New SASSA Verification Measures?
1. Monthly Income Checks
SASSA will now perform monthly checks on beneficiaries’ bank accounts to confirm continued eligibility — particularly for the SRD grant, which requires applicants to earn less than R624 per month. If income above the threshold is detected, payments may be paused or declined.
2. Government Database Cross-Checks
Beneficiary information will be automatically cross-referenced with databases from:
- The Department of Home Affairs
- The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)
- The South African Revenue Service (SARS)
This will help identify people who are either receiving income elsewhere or do not meet residency or ID requirements.
3. Biometric Verification System
SASSA is also rolling out a biometric verification process, which may include fingerprint scans or facial recognition to confirm identity before grants are paid out — especially at Postbank, retail partners, or mobile paypoints.
