The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is urging social grant beneficiaries not to ignore SMS notifications requesting them to attend a grant review. These reviews are conducted in terms of the Social Assistance Act to confirm that the correct grant is being paid to an eligible beneficiary.
What is happening?
SASSA is sending SMS messages to selected beneficiaries instructing them to visit designated offices for a social grant review.
A grant review verifies that a person still qualifies for the grant they receive. It also confirms life certification and checks whether personal details remain accurate.
If a beneficiary ignores the SMS and fails to attend the review, the grant may lapse. As a result, payment could stop.
Currently, reviews are conducted at SASSA offices or service centres. However, the agency says online review options may be introduced in future to reduce congestion and travel costs.
Why it matters to you
If you receive a grant review SMS and do nothing, your grant could be suspended. For many households in the Eastern Cape and across South Africa, social grants are a primary source of income. Therefore, missing a review appointment could create serious financial pressure.
In addition, updating your contact details helps SASSA confirm your eligibility and improves communication about your grant status.
