The African National Congress (ANC) has publicly welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to remove Sisisi Tolashe as Minister of Social Development in a move announced on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu on 14 May 2026, the governing party said the decision reflected Ramaphosa’s “commitment to ethical governance” and accountability within the state.
The ANC also confirmed that Sindisiwe Chikunga has been appointed Acting Minister of Social Development to ensure “continuity, stability and uninterrupted service delivery” in the department.
The statement does not explain why Tolashe was removed, and no official reason has yet been publicly confirmed.
The ANC described the move as part of Ramaphosa’s broader effort to combat corruption, maladministration and ethical failures in government. The party said the president had strengthened law enforcement institutions and supported investigations aimed at improving accountability across the state.
The Department of Social Development oversees key programmes affecting millions of South Africans, including SASSA grants and welfare services. Any leadership change in the department is likely to draw close public attention, particularly among grant beneficiaries and vulnerable households.
It remains unclear whether further cabinet changes could follow.
No response from Sisisi Tolashe had been included in the ANC statement at the time of publication. This has not been confirmed.
Local impact in the Eastern Cape is not yet clear, although any developments involving the Social Development portfolio may resonate strongly in rural communities dependent on social grants and welfare support.
Pondoland Times will continue monitoring for further confirmation, official explanations, or responses from affected parties.
