The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola has deployed the National Task Team responsible for investigating political killings to the Nongoma area following the killing of an IFP councillor and two school children.
The National Commissioner has also ordered the mobilisation of maximum resources to apprehend those behind this incident.
SAPS Forensic Science experts including the ballistics unit are currently on the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicates the IFP ward councillor who is attached to Nongoma Local Municipality was ambushed along the R618 in Nongoma while attending to a vehicle breakdown on Wednesday afternoon.
A group of armed men stopped next to his vehicle and shot the councillor multiples times, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
The suspects then fired shots at a passing scholar transport taxi that was transporting school children. Four children were shot and wounded and two of them aged 11 and 12 years old sadly succumbed to their injuries.
General Masemola assures the community of Nongoma that police are working around the clock, to trace and apprehend those behind this attack.
Members of the community with information on this incident are also urged to come forward to assist police investigations.
