Blasting Works Scheduled on N2 in February 2025

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has announced that a scheduled blasting operation will take place on the N2 national road between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff on Tuesday, 29 April 2025 at 12:00 PM. This is part of ongoing roadworks aimed at improving transport infrastructure in the Eastern Cape.

The blast will occur approximately 2.9 kilometres outside of Mount Frere, heading toward Mount Ayliff. For safety reasons, the road will be closed for up to 30 minutes during the operation.

Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, as delays are expected. To avoid disruption, SANRAL recommends that drivers consider the following alternative routes:

  • Exit the N2 via the Matatiele to Mount Fletcher route
  • Use the Flagstaff–Lusikisiki–Port St Johns route via the R61, rejoining the N2 at Mthatha

However, these detours may add up to 69 kilometres and around 50 minutes of additional travel time between Mthatha and Kokstad.

“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes, and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL’s Eastern Cape Provincial Head.

SANRAL has apologized for any inconvenience caused and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety and minimizing traffic disruptions during maintenance activities.
