The South African Football Association (SAFA) has extended its congratulations to referees Abongile Tom and Akhona Makalima for their recent appointments by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate as VAR and AVAR in the CAF Super Cup match between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek.
Zamalek emerged victorious in the thrilling encounter, defeating Al Ahly 4-3 on penalties to claim the 2024 CAF Super Cup title at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, 27 September 2024.
SAFA’s National Referees Committee and Referees Department praised Tom and Makalima for their dedication and professionalism, stating, “This remarkable achievement is a testament to their skill and commitment. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the honour they bring to South African officiating on the continental stage. Their appointments highlight their individual excellence and serve as an inspiration to all aspiring referees in the country.”
Both officials have been recognised as top VAR professionals on the African continent, and SAFA expressed confidence in their continued contributions to the sport. Discussions are already underway regarding the future introduction of VAR technology in South Africa’s domestic competitions, where Tom and Makalima are expected to play key roles in training and developing local match officials.
