The South African Communist Party (SACP) Umzimvubu sub-district embarked on a peaceful protest on Monday the 29th of August In a bid to fight High crime rate and the increase of Gender Based Violence cases at Maxesibeni. The march started from Maxesibeni taxi rank to Mount Aylifff police station, where the party members handed a memorandum of demands to the station commander, amongst other things they were complaining of is the way GBV cases are handled.
This comes at a time where South Africa commemorates Women’s month. “The march was triggered by the brutality of the Cabazana case, where a 16-year-old girl was raped and her eyes gouged out” said Bongekile Phikwa an SACP Umzimvubu sub district executive member.
23 year old Velisani Mngani accused of raping the 16 year old girl from Cabazana over the Easter weekend this year was supposed to appear in court yesterday but the case was postponed to the 3rd of October 2022 by the Mount Ayliff Magistrate court. The case postponement left many residents shaken as they have been attending this case numerous times. Ward 26 councillor Monwabisi Tuku said ”We have been coming here several times and the case keeps getting postponed. We are deeply wounded by today’s judgement as we were hoping that the perpetrator will finally get what he deserves and justice be served”.
Meanwhile, After the handing over the petition, the South African Communist Party Umzimvubu branch spent a day at Mount Ayliff Hospital Maternity ward yesterday to give a smile to the new mothers by giving them Cakes.
