South Africa has hit a tourism milestone, recording over 927,000 international arrivals in October 2025 — its highest October figure to date. The country has now welcomed more than 8.5 million visitors this year.
What Happened
According to the Department of Tourism, 927,426 tourists visited South Africa in October 2025. That’s a 32% increase from the same month last year.
From January to October 2025, the country received 8.56 million international visitors — 1.3 million more than in 2024.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille attributed the growth to better air access, smoother travel processes, and the quality of local tourism offerings.
“We are now in a period of sustained growth,” said De Lille. “These numbers reflect the hard work of our industry partners and tourism workers.”
Official Response
Minister De Lille thanked the country’s 1.8 million tourism workers, calling them “the heartbeat of the sector” as the festive peak season begins.
The tourism department is also reviewing the impact of the recent G20 Leaders’ Summit, which South Africa hosted successfully in 2025.
Community Impact
The surge in tourism is expected to benefit local economies — especially in high-traffic provinces like the Eastern Cape — through job creation, hospitality spending, and transport use.
