The KwaZulu-Natal legislature will vote on a motion of no confidence in Premier Thami Ntuli on 15 December 2025. Speaker Nontembeko Boyce confirmed the date during an ordinary sitting on 27 November 2025.
What Happened?
The MK Party tabled the motion as it hopes to secure backing from the National Freedom Party, ANC, and EFF to remove the IFP–DA-led government of provincial unity and form a new administration.
MK Party chief whip Bonginkosi Mngadi said the motion is based on several concerns, including alleged financial mismanagement, claims that Ntuli misled the legislature over the cost of his New York trip, and broader governance failures linked to unemployment and poverty.
Premier Responds
Speaking in KwaNdengezi on 26 November 2025, Ntuli dismissed the allegations as “sour grapes.”
He said he remains confident that the motion will not succeed. The October attempt to unseat him failed after procedural issues led to the motion being struck off.
Political Numbers and Stakes
The MK Party holds 37 of the 80 seats in the KZN legislature and is the official opposition. Ntuli’s governing coalition includes the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Democratic Alliance (DA), African National Congress (ANC), and the National Freedom Party (NFP).
Meanwhile, the Jacob Zuma-led MK Party planned a picket in Pietermaritzburg on 27 November 2025, calling for Ntuli’s resignation. The IFP has issued flyers expressing support for the premier.
