SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) have arrested a 33-year-old male for possession of illegal firearms in Ngonya location, Mqanduli 39km outside Mthatha. Major General Norman Modishana, the OR Tambo District Commissioner, commended the Tactical Response Team (TRT) for their relentless efforts in combatting crime. On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at approximately 18:00, police arrested a 33-year-old man in Ngonya locality, Kwaaiman, after uncovering a stash of unlicensed firearms at his home.
The suspect, previously identified as a person of interest in local criminal activities, was stopped while driving a Toyota bakkie. Further investigation led officers to his residence, where they discovered an alarming array of firearms and ammunition, including an R5 rifle, an AK-47, a shotgun, a pistol, and a .38 revolver—all lacking serial numbers. Authorities also recovered multiple magazines and a variety of ammunition, along with suspected stolen property.
The man has been charged with unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected stolen goods. He is set to appear before the Mqanduli Magistrate Court on Friday, January 31, 2025.
Commissioner Modishana reaffirmed the police’s commitment to preventing and investigating crime. “No stone will be left unturned as our forces on the groundwork tirelessly to ensure the safety of all communities in the district,” he stated.
