The Press Council of South Africa (PCSA) has announced the appointment of Phathiswa Magopeni as its new Executive Director, effective mid-February. Magopeni, a renowned journalist and media freedom advocate, takes over from Latiefa Mobara, who has resigned after over a decade of service.

Judge Fritz Brand, PCSA chair, welcomed Magopeni’s appointment, saying, “Phathiswa has a most impressive record in journalism, and we are really privileged to have her. I am pleased to welcome her and look forward to working with her.”

Magopeni expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am deeply honoured to join this vital institution at a time when we are experiencing an unprecedented impact of technological convergence on editorial integrity and media sustainability.”

As Executive Director, Magopeni will head the PCSA’s national office and represent the organization at various national, continental, and global events. Her role will focus on overseeing the PCSA’s operations, while remaining independent of the Complaints and Adjudication processes.

Mobara, who has resigned after over a decade of service, praised Magopeni’s expertise and dedication, saying, “Phathiswa has the expertise, dedication, and enthusiasm to take the Press Council into the future. She is a strong, capable, and visionary leader, committed to media freedom.”

The PCSA has over 400 media members that subscribe to the Press Code and is a member of the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (Nimca). Magopeni’s appointment is expected to enhance the PCSA’s image and role in promoting media freedom and democracy.
