The Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has concluded his oral testimony. The hearings, led by Adv Norman Arendse SC, began on Tuesday and continued through the early hours of Thursday.
What Happened
Lt Gen Mkhwanazi testified on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), alleging political interference and the involvement of criminals in police decision-making. He argued the task team had been effective and its dissolution raised serious concerns.
Official Response
Committee Chairperson Molapi Soviet Lekganyane said the proceedings went smoothly and confirmed that the committee will hear testimony from National Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola next. The Democratic Alliance has indicated it is seeking legal advice regarding references to its MP, Ms Dianne Kohler.
Community Impact
The inquiry aims to restore public trust in policing and accountability amid rising concerns over political influence in security structures. The committee operates under National Assembly Rule 253 and will continue hearings this week.
