Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies has officially adopted the budget vote for the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), but not without setting firm conditions to ensure improved delivery, accountability, and transparency.

The committee resolved to support the R770 million budget allocation under Vote 4, which will be debated in the mini-plenary of the National Assembly on Friday, 4 July 2025, in the Good Hope Chamber. However, MPs stressed that this approval hinges on the GCIS meeting key performance targets and strategic outcomes over the next financial year.

Committee chairperson Boyce Maneli highlighted the importance of the GCIS in coordinating effective government communication, especially in countering misinformation, supporting media diversity, and making government information accessible to all citizens. He noted that the department must now intensify efforts to ensure communication reaches rural and under-served communities.

The committee also urged the GCIS to strengthen its internal monitoring and evaluation systems, enhance communication around government programs, and play a more active role in promoting social cohesion and public participation in democratic processes.

The committee’s approval comes amid increased scrutiny of how government entities use public funds and deliver on their mandates, particularly in an election year climate where transparency and public trust are paramount.
