NTCSA and SAPP Strengthen Regional Energy Cooperation at 65th Meeting in South Africa

The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), in partnership with the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), hosted the 65th SAPP Meetings from 1–5 September 2025 at the Pivot Hotel and Conference Centre in Midrand.

Themed “Let’s not gamble with energy in the SAPP and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region,” the gathering brought together regional energy leaders for subcommittee meetings followed by the Management Committee (MANCO) to consolidate deliberations and chart a way forward.

Central to the discussions was the need for a balanced and diversified approach to energy policy, prioritising long-term stability and resilience over short-term gains. Delegates highlighted how integration within the Southern African region could support economic growth, sustainability, and affordable power.

Andrew Etzinger, NTCSA General Manager for Energy Market Services and International Trader, and SAPP MANCO Chairperson, underscored the importance of the meeting:

NTCSA Interim CEO Monde Bala added that regional cooperation remains vital:

Collaboration across borders allows us to leverage hydropower, solar, wind, and gas resources to deliver sustainable development and affordable energy. The NTCSA is fully committed to advancing SAPP’s market reforms.”

The SAPP, established in 1995 under the SADC framework, now represents 12 member countries with a combined generating capacity of nearly 83 875MW. It continues to serve as a critical platform for energy integration and cooperation across the region.
