The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has called on all funded students who received R10,800 in accommodation allowances to immediately settle outstanding payments with their landlords or risk facing evictions and deductions from future disbursements.
This follows concerns over the recent April 4 payment of R13,800 to students, which included a designated portion for housing. NSFAS clarified that of this amount, R10,800 was specifically earmarked for accommodation. The scheme noted that while full payments were disbursed to students, some recipients were not verified by their institutions as eligible for NSFAS-accredited accommodation—leading to confusion about the intended use of the funds.
To avoid further issues, institutions have been instructed to notify students residing in accredited housing about the urgency of settling their rent. NSFAS has also requested that proof of payment be submitted to each institution’s Financial Aid Office.
The scheme further appealed to Student Representative Councils (SRCs) and student organizations to assist in ensuring compliance to prevent disruptions to student housing and well-being.
NSFAS reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe, stable learning environment and encouraged students with questions to contact the agency directly.
Lol, same issues every year. The system clearly has flaws and threatening students with eviction when the system itself might be contributing to the problem feels incredibly unfair, to the point it is almost laughable in its predictability.
