Winnie Madikizela Mandela local Municipality on Thursday, officially introduced a contractor to electrify  66 households at Nomlacu in Bizana. This electrification project will be handled by a company called Oracle Energy and Power. Even though the starting date hasn’t been set yet, it is estimated that the project will take 2 months only.

Ward 26 residents are displeased with the municipality’s decision to only electrify 66 households out of 543 homes that are without electricity in the upcoming electrification project, stating that they have been waiting for long enough.

According to reports, there are residents who illegally connected on Eskom lines and electrified their homes. In response to this accusation one of the residents said they took this decision after waiting  for a very long time for the municipality to come to their rescue.

Meanwhile, Community Headman Mr Sandile Mahlungulu said he is displeased by this decision as they have requested the electrification of the whole community.

“We are grateful for the progress and acknowledge the municipality’s efforts as they have inserted  Solar systems to some of the households without electricity”, said ward 26 councillor Nomangesi Doko.

A destitute woman that has been residing at Nomlacu since 1984 who is still without electricity in her home said she has lost hope in the government system because all her neighbour’s houses are electrified but she was left in the dark with no explanation from the leaders. Stating that she has been applying for electricity with no luck.

Addressing the residents Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality Engineering Portfolio head Cllr Nkosikhona Dlamini strongly condemned the illegal connections and assured the residents that next year they will electrify another batch.
