Banyana Banyana legend Noko Matlou officially retired from international football, receiving a heartfelt send-off from teammates and fans during a commanding 3-0 win over Malawi in an international friendly at UJ Soweto Campus.
The 39-year-old, who began her national team journey as a striker before transitioning to defense, captained the side in her final appearance. Late in the second half, Matlou was substituted for Shakira O’Malley, exiting the field to a standing ovation from players and spectators alike.
Reflecting on her career, Matlou expressed gratitude and optimism for the team’s future:
“I’m very happy at this moment and going forward I wish the team luck and well for WAFCON and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.”
The match showcased Banyana Banyana’s dominance, with Nonhlanhla Mthandi opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Linda Motlhalo doubled the lead with a penalty in the 21st minute, and Mthandi secured her brace in the 51st minute, earning her the Diski Queen of the Match award.
Head coach Dr. Desiree Ellis praised the team’s performance and acknowledged the physical challenge posed by Malawi:
“I think we are on the right track. For this game, we wanted the physicality because we know what Malawi can do, and they gave us that.”
This fixture is part of Banyana Banyana’s preparations for the defense of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title and upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The team is set to face Malawi again on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, in a match that will honor another veteran, Nompumelelo Nyandeni, as she also bids farewell to international football.
