The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), in partnership with Sanlam, has officially opened submissions for the 2025 Nat Nakasa Awards for Courageous Journalism. Recognized as one of the country’s most prestigious journalism accolades, the awards honour media practitioners who demonstrate exceptional courage, integrity, and commitment to truth, even under adverse condition.

Open to journalists across all media platforms, including print, broadcast, and online outlets, the competition features two categories:

  • Media Integrity: celebrating fearless reporting and steadfast ethics.
  • Community Media: spotlighting impactful local journalism.

Entrants should have produced work between June 2024 and June 2025, showcasing resistance to censorship, dedication to public service, and bravery in uncovering uncomfortable truths.

To submit an entry, candidates—or their nominators—must provide:

  1. A motivation letter (max 300 words).
  2. A copy of their published work or a broadcast sample.

Previous recipients are ineligible. Winners of the Media Integrity award will receive R20,000, while the Community Media award winner will receive R10,000, along with certificates and national recognition.

Entries close later this year. Finalists will be honoured at the Nat Nakasa Awards ceremony, a high-profile event that celebrates journalism’s role in upholding democracy, freedom of expression, and social justice.
