The O.R. Tambo District Municipality, in partnership with Walter Sisulu University and the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency (SEDFa), hosted a Community Partnership and University Engagement Programme to celebrate graduates who successfully completed a six-month business training course.
What Happened
The event recognised the achievements, resilience, and progress of 16 entrepreneurs who participated in the programme from February to July 2025.
The initiative blended academic learning with practical application, covering modules such as Personal Finance Management, Business Finance Principles, Investment Planning, and Strategic Decision-Making.
The programme aimed to strengthen local enterprise by:
- Transferring university-level business skills to the community
- Supporting individuals without formal university education
- Promoting ethical and sustainable entrepreneurship
- Awarding certificates as symbols of commitment and leadership
Official Response
Speaking during the event, organisers commended the graduates for their determination and courage to learn.
“These entrepreneurs represent the future of our local economy innovative, ethical, and community-driven,” one official said.
The O.R. Tambo District Municipality noted that participants from Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality were among the graduates, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive economic empowerment.
Community Impact
The partnership between the municipality, WSU, and SEDFa demonstrates a sustainable approach to economic growth through education and collaboration. Graduates are expected to apply their new business management skills to build enterprises that create jobs and inspire other aspiring entrepreneurs across the Eastern Cape.
