A devastating crash on the N2 near Qumbu on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of a woman and her three children.
Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the provincial transport department, reported that the accident occurred around 4 pm when a Mercedes-Benz SUV, carrying only the driver, collided head-on with a VW Up carrying four passengers.
All four occupants of the VW Up — a woman in her 40s and her three children, aged 12, 9, and 5 — died at the scene. “It is believed they were on their way home for the festive season,” Binqose said.
The SUV driver sustained minor injuries.
Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating the incident.
Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and urged motorists to prioritize safety on the roads. “Head-on collisions are preventable,” Binqose emphasized, calling for collective action to reduce road fatalities.
