Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, has expressed deep concern over the unrest that has occurred at Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha. The incident, which has left several individuals injured and one person dead, raises serious questions about the safety and security of students and staff on campus.
In her statement, Minister Nkabane strongly condemned all forms of violence and intimidation, emphasizing that educational institutions must be safe spaces for learning, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence. “Students and staff deserve protection in their academic environments,” she asserted, extending her heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery to those injured in the disturbances.
The Minister has requested an urgent and detailed report from the university regarding the incident, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. “We cannot allow such disorder to disrupt the academic landscape,” Dr. Nkabane stated.
In her response to the unrest, the Minister plans to visit Walter Sisulu University in the coming days to engage with stakeholders and assess the situation on the ground. This visit aims to evaluate the current climate and ensure that measures are implemented to safeguard the university community.
Students have also voiced their concerns regarding the incident. They have accused the residence manager of shooting at protesting students. Student Representative Council (SRC) president Themba Zikhali emphasized that the institution must address their needs.
Dr. Nkabane remains steadfast in her belief that no student should face harm while exercising their right to education.
