Young farmers from Mgodini Village in Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Municipality received new agricultural equipment from Alfred Nzo District Municipality this week. The handover was part of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, held in ward 10 to promote local resilience.
The donated tools aim to boost food security, youth employment, and sustainable farming in the Eastern Cape. The Mgodini Cooperative, led by young residents, welcomed the donation as a stepping stone toward commercial production.
“We appreciate the support we received,” said Secretary Mr Yandani Xabanisa. “We aim to grow more and reach markets with this equipment.”
Councillor Eunice Diko from the municipality’s Community Development Services called on residents to use local knowledge to reduce disaster risks.
What the Mgodini Youth Received
The handover included essential tools to support crop production and disaster resilience.
Equipment donated included:
- Hand hoes and spades
- Garden forks and watering cans
- Wheelbarrows and rakes
- Protective clothing
- Organic compost and fertiliser
This support aligns with Alfred Nzo District’s goals for rural development, youth empowerment, and climate adaptation.
Why This Matters to the Community
The initiative not only supports local food production but also:
- Encourages young people to stay in rural areas
- Reduces dependency on food aid
- Promotes indigenous knowledge in agriculture
- Builds resilience to drought and natural disasters
- Opens opportunities for rural agri-business
Municipal leaders hope the programme will scale to other villages in 2026.
