The Muholi Art Institute (MAI) is backing the Durban Grannies Football Club as the 60-plus side departs for an interprovincial tournament in Cape Town from 6–10 October 2025, following a community send-off in Durban on 4 October. MAI is funding travel, documenting the team’s journey, and featuring players in its 100 Women Project.

What Happened

MAI confirmed sponsorship for the Durban Grannies—players drawn from senior citizens’ clubs in Durban and Pietermaritzburg—and called on the public to help with final essentials such as team gear, transport credits, and wellness packs. The reigning champions will represent KwaZulu-Natal against teams from Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape.

Official Response

“It’s about time we rally behind women in South African sport,” said Zanele Muholi, MAI founder and visual activist. “By supporting their travel, sharing their stories, and featuring them in our 100 Women Project, we’re fuelling a movement for visibility, empowerment, and joy.”

“As both a teammate and documentarian, I’ve seen how these gogos turn every challenge into a highlight reel,” added Lizzy Muholi, player and official team photographer.

“This partnership is lifting us higher than we dreamed,” said Hlokomani Ndwandwe, organising committee member, urging communities to get behind the team.

Community Impact

Beyond the pitch, the Grannies run inclusive friendlies for retirees, support youth programmes and Sunday schools, and headline curtain-raisers on key civic days—work MAI plans to document professionally. Donations in kind (gear, vouchers, transport credits, healthy snacks/first-aid) and cash contributions to the club’s verified account are welcomed as the team competes in Cape Town this week.
